Cheer Chen & Idiots
One of our guests from Friday night smsed me on Friday afternoon to check that (i) we knew who Cheer Chen was, and (ii) we would be available to go for her 'A Piece of Summer' Concert at Max Pavilion on Saturday.
So we got to Singapore Expo slightly after 7pm and had Burger King for dinner, and made our way through the City Harvest Crowd, just like the earlier Mayday Final Home Concert.
But unlike the Mayday Concert, the crowd was rather smallish. Probably about half of Mayday's.
The people in the crowd were different too. Less rowdy, if you will.
We found our seats, not very far from the stage but already 2/3 of the crowd depth from the 1st row.
And waited.

Meanwhile, we realised that there was a kid, about 4-5 years old sitting behind us with his mother. You can see the mother in this picture.

Finally, the concert started... No opening band...
Thought maybe Mayday would have done her a favour coz they recently did a number together.

WOOOO... Here she comes...

..............................................
At this point, with the music starting, the kid behind us began to talk even more loudly coz he probably thought since he couldn't hear his own voice, his mother probably couldn't either.
I turned around and diao-ed the mother a couple of times.
While the mother started to whisper to her son (she obviously knew they were being a nuisance), she didn't stop her son from shouting successfully.
And this went on for a few songs.
We had to shift ourselves to some vacant seats a few rows in front. And so did some guys who were sitting beside the kid.
I mean... Seriously...
Yeah... It's cool that you wanna be a cool parent by bringing your kid to a concert, but not at the expense of other people?!
And this ain't no rock concert, hokay?!
Ms Cheer Chen was solo on stage with her acoustic guitar and her naked voice, when your kid was asking so many questions about her headpiece, her dress, her everything, and you were crunching your plastic bags!
If you cannot even be civilised about social interaction, then why the fuck are you parenting?!
I seriously think cinema operators/concert organisers ought to disallow children below certain age for certain type of movies/performances.
Not every single show is Disney on Ice.
KNN... =_=

Ok, back to 'A Piece of Summer' and Ms Cheer Chen...
Actually, I have only heard 2 of her songs.
And I hear these are mostly her own works.
The concert is obviously not an expensive affair.
As usual, the sound at Max Pavilion is lousy.
The stage set-up was minimally, making use of some large LED screens with consistently moving screensaver-like images.

Actually, the entire feel is like walking into a huge lomograph exhibit with music playing rather loudly.
This is the first time I see any a plant-decorated mike stand.
I think it is to complement her ethereal 'white-ruffles-dress with jeans' look.

After a while, it was apparent that her songs all sounded similar. (At some point, she was singing in French? In an Amelie kind of way...)
And because of the way she sang, her voice was more part of the music (like how the bass, the drums blended together), rather than a 'lead' in the ensemble, if you know what I mean...
Not very intriguing for a concert.
If there was meant to be any sort of 'quiet energy', I didn't feel it at all. Sorry, man...
But I must point out that the texture of the otherwise bland music was generated by this accordion.

While 'Good Fren' insisted that her band's drummer (not in pic) had to be from 动力火车, we heard her introducing this other drummer as '小白'.

About 1 hour into the concert, around the time they did the 'Sentimental Kills' number, we left and headed to East Coast Park for some coconuts.

WTF IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE LIKE THE MOTHER?!
